Settling In Policy

In the pre-school years, it is vital that children are exposed to positive learning experiences in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable. Effective, proven and consistent settling in procedures will ensure that this is possible.

Parents and children are encouraged to visit as often as possible before the child is expected to attend. We suggest visiting regularly for the fortnight prior to your child’s official start date for at least two or three visits.

At these visits, you and your child are encouraged to get to know all their child’s teachers and in particular their child’s primary carer (infants) or key teacher (toddlers and kindergarten children).

These primary carers and key teachers are responsible for your child’s routine, encouraging the settling in process, and your child’s Journey of Learning Book. We encourage the sharing of knowledge about each child with our teachers to help the settling process.

You are welcome to stay during the first stages of transition until your child is settled into an activity or happy with a teacher.

Parents are welcome to bring any named special toys/cuddlies that might help their child settle. You are then encouraged to say goodbye once and then leave, as frequent coming and going can be unsettling for any child.

We endeavor to ensure our sleeping room is a positive and peaceful space. However, it will not be a silent space and parents can help with this by encouraging their children to be able to sleep at home with some background noise. We recommend that parents put their children down to sleep while they are still awake, rather than rocking or being held by an adult, as our teachers are often too busy to do this for each infant.

Please label all your baby’s bottles and clothing clearly to avoid mix-ups. Settling into a new environment is different for every child and every parent. Each child and parent settle at their own pace. You will need to allow time for yourself and your children to settle into our new environment.

Remember, there will be good days and bad days in an early childhood setting – just the same as you have at home.
